Ullswater Yacht Club Open Day Report

Ullswater Yacht Club Open Day Report

MORE than 100 visitors took to the water at a special open day at Ullswater Yacht Club on Saturday, May 28.

Despite the breezy weather the ‘open house’ event at the club, voted Club of the Year 2010 by the country’s top sailing magazine Yachts and Yachting, attracted more than 200 visitors from all over the region.

The highlight of the day was the chance to go for a sail on Cumbria’s most beautiful lake.

And many of the visitors, young and old, jumped at the chance to have a sail.

A range of dinghies and cruisers, were rigged and ready with a team of experienced helms standing by to take the budding sailors for a ride.

Commodore Roy Hulse, who was there all day greeting the visitors, said he was delighted at the turnout and that so many people had wanted to go sailing.

“The conditions were far from ideal and at times we had suspend sailing when the wind became too strong. But for most of the day we had people on the water – and they came ashore smiling”

The club also offered a range of other attractions including a chance find out about activities on and off the water, a high performance sailing demonstration, a fun junior race to watch and a display of some of the most popular boats sailed at the club. In the clubhouse was a multi-media presentation and activities for youngsters.

Roy gave special thanks to all the club members who gave their time to make the open day a success on and off the water, including a team of Sea Cadets from TS Cumberland, Carlisle.

The winner of the ‘Find the Commodore’s cap’ competition was Matt Jackson of Carlisle who won a special edition UYC cap.
