SO, WHAT IS IT LIKE TO BE RACE OFFICER FOR THE BIRKETT?

SO, WHAT IS IT LIKE TO BE RACE OFFICER FOR THE BIRKETT?

As Sailing Secretary for racing I thought it should be my duty to take the role as OOD for the 2014 Birkett. This seemed like a good idea at the time.  However, as the event grew closer, reality started to creep in.

This years Birkett had Garmin sponsorship and I was confident that we would get a good entry, but I never thought we would get 210 boats especially in the present climate.

Watching the weather forecast all week I knew the wind was not going to be good and it appeared to be dropping all the way up to the weekend.

Starting 210 boats across the lake was always going to be a challenge, but when you get two different wind directions on each end of the line, which we did on Saturday, it is a headache.

Sunday’s race was especially hard.  After two false starts it was time for something different and with three safety boats deployed, trying to keep the fleet back, it was a clean start, which was a relief.

The Birkett can be a cruel race when the lead boat gets 25 minutes ahead then finds the wind has filled in the opposite direction, to give the fleet a run for the line. That’s Ullswater I’m afraid.

What I really wanted to say is the event would not have been remotely possible without all those volunteers, and the support I received as OOD was phenomenal, everybody helped in some way.

Special thanks to Sean and Pamela Brooks, I guess nobody realised the start processor was broken the weekend before and Sean repaired it for Saturday morning. Thanks to Pamela for keeping everyone in the Race Office on their toes.

Also thanks to Sheila Robinson for on the water safety, she always does a brilliant job. And to John Robinson who worked tirelessly before, during and after the Birkett.

Here’s looking forward to the 2015 Birkett.  Hope we have the same success next year, maybe we can build on the numbers.

Thanks again,

Graham
