Report on UYC Sail Camp, July 27 – August 1

Report on UYC Sail Camp, July 27 – August 1

All the budding young sailors, many of them from the Penrith area, camped at the club from Sunday night, July 27 through to Friday afternoon, August 1.

They spent the daytime in sailing groups with other children of a similar age and ability working towards an RYA certificate or receiving race coaching.

The group included 10 complete beginners and seven fourteen year olds who were training to be assistant instructors. Whilst the week started gently with light winds and sunshine on Monday the young sailors were soon having to cope with more challenging conditions as the wind speed increased on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The week’s sailing activities included the traditional trip to Pooley Bridge for ice cream.  In addition to sailing, the children took part in shore-based team games in the evenings to help them with teamwork and problem solving skills. Instruction was provided by 20 of the club’s own instructors on a voluntary basis.

Most of these instructors learnt to sail at the club and have developed their skills through the UYC training programme.

The shore team was made up of parent volunteers who provided the usual fantastic food and made sure that everything ran smoothly. The week finished with a regatta on Friday morning followed by a sail to Old Church on the opposite side of the lake for a very damp picnic.

Winners of this year’s trophies included Alex Leslie from Appleby (1st boy under 11 in the regatta) and Joss Noble from Culgaith (1st boy under 15 in the regatta).
