UYC Cadet and Junior Presentation Night, October 11, 2014

UYC Cadet and Junior Presentation Night, October 11, 2014

The cadet fleet is open to under 15s sailing Toppers or Optimists. Along with prizes for the overall series winners, prizes are also awarded for the first under 12 and 10. The transition between cadet and adult racing is bridged with junior races for the under 18s.

“The aim of the cadet and junior fleets is to have fun on the water. Ullswater Yacht Club provides an excellent environment to develop young sailors,” he said.

And there was plenty of fun to be had on Saturday, with the two final light wind races followed by a UYC version of ‘Total Wipeout’ with two teams competing to run across between jetties on upturned boats avoiding wet buckets of water and a hosepipe.

At the prizegiving there was congratulations to all who sailed and took part in races this year.

Joss Noble, 14, of Culgaith, was a cadet series winner sailing a Topper. This year he has

become an assistant dinghy instructor so is able to assist not only teaching youngsters but also adults at the club. Emily Loftouse-Hill, of Darlington was also a cadet series winner.

Junior trophy winner Harris Parker-McLeod, of Penrith, who sails a Laser Radial, has also become a dinghy instructor.

The highlight of the year was sail camp, run entirely by volunteers and offering five days of sailing under the instruction of qualified RYA instructors and club racing coaches. A total of 52 budding young sailors aged from eight to 14 attended this year’s sail camp and gained RYA qualifications.

The club was also chosen to host the Topper Northern Championships in June which attracted top young sailors from all over the region as well as a RYA North West Junior Travellers event in May.

“It has been a great year and we are looking forward to welcoming all our young sailors, and many newcomers, to sail on our beautiful lake in 2015,” said Stephen Potter.
