A great year for UYC

A great year for UYC

The 2015 programme launches on Sunday, March 22, with the traditional opener, the Spring Noggin handicap race guaranteed to get rid of all the winter cobwebs.

The first open event of the year is just two weeks later - the Easter Regatta, from Saturday to Monday, April 4 – 6. It’s open to all classes and visitors are welcome.

Visitors are also welcome to a series of special fleet weekends held throughout the season, as well as Ullswater Regatta on August 15 & 16 which is followed by the ever-popular Ullswater Week - a whole week of sailing and family fun.

Highlight of the year is the Lord Birkett Memorial Trophy which will be held on the weekend of July 4 & 5. The Birkett is the club’s most prestigious event attracting entries of more than 200 boats and voted number eight in the world’s top 50 regattas by Yachts & Yachting.

“The Birkett is always hugely popular and we are delighted that every year racers from all over the country come to sail on our beautiful lake,” said Commodore Peter Lewis.

“But there is so much going on at the club throughout the whole season and we are keen to cater for everyone - young and not-so-young, racing and cruising members, newcomers and the more experienced.

“The new racing programme has a number of innovative features which will make it easier for novices and less confident members to enjoy the racing side of our sport.”

The programme for the year also includes low-key cruiser racing on Fridays and a friendly Wednesday night ‘twilight’ racing series from May to September; regular junior and cadet racing and training; Masters Week and Sail Camp for young members.

A ‘Ladies Who Launch’ series of friendly Saturday sessions has been so successful in helping women members enjoy getting on the water that it is to be joined by a new group ‘Blokes in Boats.’

Also on offer is the usual UYC hospitality – excellent food from the galley, fun social events and free camping for members in lovely surroundings.

To find out more about the UYC experience, contact membership secretary (new members) Harry Patrick. Details about joining the club and the 2015 programme can be found on this website.
