Tickled pink

Rick and Steve have set up regular Blokes in a Boat sessions on Saturday mornings, meeting at the same time as the successful Ladies Who Launch group which is now in its third year.

Pink was the theme of the day as the two instructors wore new pink UYC hoodies to mark the occasion and seven blokes turned up for the first session of informal sailing and coaching with a safety boat on hand.

“In true bloke style we went to the bar (unfortunately closed) for a discussion of the morning’s event,” explained Steve Potter.

“We amazed ourselves by managing to beat the Ladies Who Launch out onto the water, despite them already being dressed for the occasion! It was a great start to the sessions with near perfect winds for the morning and the rain stopped just as we ventured out. We cannot wait until next weekend to splash the pink again.”

The Ladies Who Launch session also went well, with a good turn-out and instructors Anne Noble and Julie Archer were delighted to see the ‘blokes’ on the water.

“The clubhouse was full and buzzing from early on Saturday. It was really positive,” said Anne.

And the Blokes and Ladies sessions were followed by another new project to help club members to enjoy their time on the water. The Start Racing series, with its laid-back approach, is aimed at sailors who are new to racing and this year some of the more experienced racers, led by 49er sailors, Lester Noble, John McAfee and Matty and James Lyons will be on hand to help, advise and encourage.

The first Coached Saturday attracted 14 boats, with sailors getting together informally for tips from the experts before the racing. And the sessions were such a success that Coached Saturdays will be held throughout the year – on June 13, July 1, August 8, August 29 and October 3.

Blokes in a Boat and Ladies Who Launch meet again at 10am on Saturday, May 2. Then it’s down to the serious business of racing with a three-day Open event, from May 2-4, in which the club will welcome racers with Skiff-class boats for three days of competition while club members take part in Fleet Weekend and a special long distance race on Monday, May 4.
