Hotel Cup, Island Series, Tempest Northerns, May 16 & 17

Hotel Cup, Island Series, Tempest Northerns, May 16 & 17

Ullswater Yacht Club racers took part in the first long distance race of the year on Saturday, May 16.

The Island Race series – setting off from the club at the Northern end of the lake, racing south round Norfolk Island at the Glenridding end and back – was held in wild and windy conditions. The Westerly wind was so strong, it whipped up high waves and the gusts were even stronger. The race was eventful with capsizes and breakages keeping the safety crew very busy.

First back to the club were Dave and Sue Giles in a Flying Fifteen. They won on handicap with Flying Fifteens also taking second and third places.

Members of the Crusier fleet sailed to the island in a special race for the Hotel Cup. Chris Taylor and his crew, Cana Witt and Roger O’Connell in an Etap 21 were first home and took the trophy.

Meanwhile, back at the club end of the lake the Tempest class were competing for the Northern Championships in equally challenging conditions. A total of fve races were held over the windy weekend. One huge squall on Sunday was captured on camera hitting the fleet by club member and photographer Nick Powley, see below.  Mike Adams and his son Paul won the Northern title with four firsts, Ian Modral and Graham Donkin were second.

On Saturday, May 23, the club is joining the RYA's Push the Boat Out campaign with the second of three Taster Sessions being held this month. Each session will last about an hour and you can come along to the club between 11am and 3pm to try your hand at sailing a dinghy under the friendly expert guidance of a qualified RYA sailing instructor. The sessions (May 23 and 30) are completely free, the club will provide buoyancy aids and children’s helmets - all you need is warm clothing, waterproofs and shoes you don’t mind getting wet.

The taster sessions are for all from eight to 80+, or younger with parents or guardians, family groups are most welcome. To avoid disappointment it is essential to pre-book. Ring the club on 01768 486333, or email
