Ladies Day, May 23, 2015

Ladies Day, May 23, 2015

There was an excellent turnout of 25 boats, from single-handed Toppers, to racing dinghies and cruisers and sailors of all ages from juniors to veterans.

And it was an event strictly for the birds – the men of the club were only allowed to take part if they were crewing for a lady helm. Because the winds were very light, the decision was made not to hold an island race for the cruisers but to have one long distance race at the club end of the lake.

Winner of the cruiser race and the rose bowl trophy, was Sam Harding, crewed by her young son Charlie, sailing her Hunter Europa. Sam, a local vet who works for a practice based at Newbiggin near Penrith, is a regular racer at the club in her cruiser and a past ladies champion.

Twenty boats sailed two races at the Northern end of the lake in front of the clubhouse in very light shifty conditions for the dinghy trophy. Four single-handed sailors battled it out for the top four places and it was Julie Archer in a Lightning who won the trophy with a first and a second, followed by Claire Neilson in a Laser Radial in second place and Rebecca Bairstow in a Laser taking third. One of the contenders, Emily Styles sailing a 29er skiff by herself had a costly capsize in the second race, putting her in fourth place. Maia Hallam took the Topper youth trophy after a close battle at the finishing line with the other Topper girls.

The day in the sun was rounded off with tea and scones after the prizegiving with thanks given to race officer Christian Barnes and the safety crew. The organiser of the event was Anne Noble who was delighted to see so many competitors take part this year, especially the juniors and newcomers to sailing. Anne, along with fellow sailing instructor Julie Archer, runs regular informal Saturday morning sailing sessions at the club called Ladies Who Launch, aimed at getting more women to enjoy being on the water and she was thrilled that so many members of the group were involved.
