A golden weekend, May 30 & 31

A golden weekend, May 30 & 31

Sarah explained the commitment involved in an Olympic campaign and showed videos of some of the key moments in her sailing career as well as passing round her two gold medals, from Athens and Beijing, to the audience.

UYC Commodore Peter Lewis said: “We were honoured and proud to welcome Sarah to our club. Her talk was really inspirational and I was pleased to see so many of our younger members there.”

Sarah also presented the Ladies Trophy to Julie Archer who won the dinghy event at Ladies Day on May 23.

The talk in the clubhouse followed a special meal at the club – a delicious buffet - to welcome new members who have joined over the past year. New Members Secretary Harry Patrick introduced officials to the newcomers and said he hoped they would embrace the idea of us all working together as part of the club ‘family’.

Also visiting us on Saturday was Debbie Smith of the RYA who spent time with the cruiser members explaining the new National Cruiser Handicap System.

And the whole weekend had an OIympic theme with a series of team-based ‘Challenge’ events, a combination of fun and serious racing, organised by Lester and Anne Noble, Matty and James Lyons and John McAfee. Those taking part were divided into three teams – Brazil, Italy and Australia and there was a great turnout of 26 boats on the Saturday in fresh gusty winds. There were fewer boats on Sunday with strong winds and even bigger gusts. The team winners were Brazil and the winners on Sunday were Mirror sailors Robert Richardson and Sandy Simpson.

So much going on for one weekend and all because so many club members put the effort in to make it happen. Thanks to you all, that’s just what Harry means about working together.
