First Pimm's Cruise, June 13

First Pimm's Cruise, June 13

The Cruise was an idea from new Leisure Representative at UYC Carl Hallam to get sailors and non-sailors alike to enjoy the many activities the lake has to offer. It was aptly named the Pimm’s Cruise and at 2pm, six cruisers, three dinghies, 30 excited individuals (and a dog) aged from five-80 set off in almost perfect sailing conditions down towards the lagoon at Glenridding at the other end of the lake.

Rain clouds threatened but never materialised and almost a couple of hours later, everyone had reached the lagoon and after varying degrees of difficulty anchoring up with the cruisers, we headed for the secluded beach and set away a BBQ.

Everyone mingled and enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere. While the children ran off to explore the area and create dens, the adults bonded over a few drinks swapping stories about experiences sailing on the lake. It was great to see so many families taking part and embracing the fantastic family life that UYC has to offer - it was like our very own Swallows and Amazons adventure.

There were long standing members and even a family who had joined the night before who came along to make new friends and, in their own words “have fun as a family”. Plenty of Pimm’s and lemonade and sausages and burgers flowed long into the evening and by 7 it was time to head back to reality

The dinghy sailors who had braved it all the way down the lake took the cruisers’ offers of tows and we all headed in varying speeds back up the lake taking in and appreciating the stunning scenery around us. You could hear the laughter coming from the boats and you knew a good day had been had by all.  It was a fantastic day out and we are all looking forward to the next leisure cruise. - Neil and Meryl Sayer
