Sharrow Bay prize for Birkett winner

Sharrow Bay prize for Birkett winner

The 53rd Lord Birkett Memorial Trophy is being held over the weekend of July 4 and 5 and the club’s next door neighbour, the prestigious Sharrow Bay country house hotel has offered a prize for the winner – bed and breakfast for two.

Entries are pouring in for the race weekend which is open to all monohulls with a recognised handicap rating. All boats, from the smallest dinghies to high performance racing machines and cruisers, race from one mass start with the line stretching across the full width of the lake. They race down the lake, a distance of about seven miles, round an island at the southern end, and back, on Saturday and Sunday.

The unique race was first sailed in 1963 in memory of the ‘Saviour of Ullswater’ Lord Norman Birkett who successfully defended the right of public access to the lake which was threatened with reservoir status.

“We are delighted to have the opportunity at Sharrow Bay to show our support for our neighbours at Ullswater Yacht Club,” said the hotel’s General Manager Oliver Smith.

“Ullswater would have been a very different place had Lord Birkett not successfully defended the right of public access, and as our history sits alongside that of the lake we feel it wholly appropriate to offer a night at Sharrow Bay to the winner. We look forward to enjoying the spectacle of this iconic race and wish the very best to the Yacht Club and all participants for a successful weekend.”

UYC Commodore Peter Lewis added: “We are proud to be associated with the famous hotel which is just round the corner from our clubhouse.”

The event is again sponsored by Ullswater ‘Steamers’ who are running the special Birkett cruise on Saturday, July 4, in which passengers will follow the racers at close hand accompanied by a commentary on the racing by club members. The club is also grateful for the continuing support of Neil Pryde for a range of prizes for the winners.
