Afternoon tea at the Sharrow Bay, July 19

The race, which involved sailing round Sharrow buoy in front of the hotel, then the full length of the lake to the Glenridding end, round Norfolk Island, back to Sharrow buoy and finishing at the clubhouse, was held in challenging gusty conditions.

Chris, in his Etap 21 ‘Off Piste’ was the winner on handicap from the ten-strong fleet of racing cruisers. Then all the sailors, and their family and friends headed round the corner again to celebrate with the Sharrow Bay’s legendary afternoon tea and cakes. The handsome trophy, donated by a past Club President, was presented by Master Sommelier Kelvin Lees.

The Sharrow Bay very kindly declined payment for the refreshments. It was agreed that the money collected would be donated jointly between the RNLI and the Great North Air Ambulance, the two charities UYC will be supporting over its Regatta Weekend on August 15 and 16 in memory of three well respected cruiser members who are sadly missed -  David Ashton, Peter Ward and Gordon Carr.

Commodore Peter Lewis said: "We are very grateful to the Sharrow Bay for allowing us to hold our trophy presentation at the hotel and for generously providing us with an excellent afternoon tea in such beautiful surroundings. The money we have raised will be a welcome boost for our charity collection in memory of three cruiser members which we have planned for Regatta Weekend. Our cruiser sailors, their families and friends had a day to remember and we look forward to further developing our links with our famous next door neighbours.”
