Sail Camp 2015

Sail Camp 2015

Forty youngsters, aged from eight to 14, had five days of fun on and off the water at Ullswater Yacht Club’s annual Sail Camp from July 27-31. A number of these were new members taking part in their first club activity. Some were complete beginners or had done very little sailing before and are hopefully now enthused enough to continue with the sport. All those taking part were working towards completion of their next RYA stage with some of the older, more experienced, sailors undertaking training to become Assistant Instructors.

The weather produced its usual range of challenges. The first two days were wet and cool with very little wind. Despite this there were no complaints from the budding young sailors who did their best to get their boats moving and stay warm. Fortunately conditions improved later in the week to give good winds for the final regatta and picnic on Friday.

Not all of the week was about improving sailing skills. Instructors added in a number of fun activities, and trips to Pooley Bridge for ice cream. The evenings were taken up with team games enabling the youngsters to meet up with people from other sailing groups.

UYC Commodore Peter Lewis said: “Sail Camp is one of the highlights of the year at the club. Our young members are our future and it is good to see so many of them learning to love sailing at the club. Sail Camp is run totally by volunteers from the club and I would like to thank them all for putting the time in every year to make it possible.”
