What a week that was! Holiday Week, August 17-21

What a week that was! Holiday Week, August 17-21

A total of 25 boats took part in a series of seven races with the overall winners local sailors Mike Egan and Keith McDermott in a Tempest. The youngsters also had their own series of Cadet races and nine keen young sailors took part. The winner was Emily Lofthouse-Hill in a Topper who learned to sail at the club just 15 months ago. All the youngsters, many of them new to sailing, were praised at the prizegiving by Club Secretary Rob Watson for their enthusiasm and the way they had all coped with racing in a wide range of challenging conditions.

Traditionally Wednesday is given over to an island race which is held on a long distance course the full length of the lake and back. Nineteen boats took part and the race was won on handicap by Dave and Sue Giles in a Wayfarer.

But it wasn’t just about the serious racing. All the competitors enjoyed the ‘Nine Buoy Challenge’ pursuit event with the winners after four races, Cathy Goodwin and Cerys Murphy from Port Dinorwic Sailing Club in a Miracle. And the spectators had fun watching the Match Racing which was held in the club’s Picos. In an exciting final, the winner, after some controversial judging decisions, was Benedict Barnes, with Graham Priestley in second place.

Boat of the Day winners were: Monday - Julie Archer in an Aero; Tuesday - Leah Murphy in an Optimist; Wednesday - Paul Boardman, Fiona Gibson and Jon Abbatt in a Nacra; Thursday - the Davidson family, Valdek, Annabel and Jessica in a Laser Stratos and Topaz.

Off the water, children’s activities were held every day, including a circus skills workshop with Jester Juggler, there was evening entertainment and everyone had such a good time they are already looking forward to Holiday Week next year.

Thanks to Julie Archer for organising the week and for everyone else who helped to make it such a success. Below:  A line-up of some of the Holiday Week prizewinners
