UYC girls represent Cumbria at national event, Oct 10 & 11

UYC girls represent Cumbria at national event, Oct 10 & 11

For the first time Cumbria entered a team in the National Schools Sailing Association (NSSA) single-handed team racing championships which were sailed in Toppers at Hunts Sailing Club in Cambridgeshire.

And teenagers Megan Thornley, Isabel Abbatt and Holly Monk, who are all members of UYC, were delighted to finish 10th overall out of 32 entries, and even more delighted to be first all-girl team, winning six of the nine races they sailed.

The girls all live in different part of Cumbria but get together to sail and race at Ullswater on a weekend, as well as racing at events all over the country, and are making their mark on the sport at a national level. Megan Thornley is 16, lives in Hincaster, near Kendal, and goes to Sixth Form at Lancaster Girls' Grammar School. Holly Monk is also 16, and lives in Windermere and Isabel Abbatt is 14, lives in Sedbergh and attends Queen Elizabeth School at Kirkby Lonsdale.

Megan and Holly have recently teamed up to regularly sail together in a double-handed trapeze boat, the 29er and Isabel now usually races an RS200. The event was sailed in Toppers provided by the organising club to ensure an even playing field, with three boats to a team. Run to a strict format, team racing places the emphasis on sailing tactically rather than just fast. This event was run by the NSSA so entry was restricted to under 19s.

The girls are already planning to compete again next year and see if they can do better, and are on the lookout for a fourth team member so they can compete in the double-handed event next March.

UYC Commodore Peter Lewis said: “The girls have done the club, and Cumbria proud. They are great ambassadors for our sport.”

The girls also received special congratulations from members of the club’s Ladies Who Launch group which is aimed at getting more women on the water and is part of Active Cumbria’s ‘This Girl Can’ campaign set up by Sport England to encourage women to take part in sports activities.
