We're open! Daffodil Race, March 20, 2016

Ullswater Yacht Club showed its support for Ullswater Daff Fest which is being held for the next three weeks by turning the first event of the season into a Daffodil Race. The traditional start to the racing year, the Spring Noggin handicap event on Sunday, March 20, had an extra prize -  as well as bottles of whisky there were bunches of daffodils.

It was a very special event for the club, marking the start of a busy sailing programme after being badly affected by the December floods. The launch of the new sailing season was something that some members thought would not be possible after the clubhouse was completely surrounded by water and much of the dinghy park was submerged. But Commodore Peter Lewis pledged that the club would be open as scheduled on March 19 and members and club officials worked tirelessly over the winter to ensure that the club would be up and running.

As the village of Pooley Bridge was celebrating the reopening of their new temporary bridge over the River Eamont after the iconic stone bridge had been swept away in the floods, UYC members were celebrating by rigging their boats on the front lawn ready for the first race of the year. Even the weather joined in the party, with bright sunshine and blue skies. The only thing missing was the wind and competitors had to wait for a couple of hours for the Northerly to arrive.

A great turn-out of 17 boats finally took to the water and two short races were held in the light and shifting winds. The overall winners were Lester Noble and John McAfee in a 49er with two first places on handicap. Phil Noak was second in a Laser and Dave and Sue Giles third in a Flying Fifteen.

Ullswater Daff Fest takes place from March 28 to April 17. It’s organised by the National Trust and is a series of events around the Ullswater Valley that enables everyone, both young and old, to delight in daffodils just as our local literary greats once did. For details visit
