Three class events in one weekend, June 25 & 26

Three class events in one weekend, June 25 & 26

It was a busy weekend in the run-up to the club’s biggest event, the Lord Birkett Memorial Trophy on July 2 and 3 – winner of Cumbria Tourism Event of the Year at the Cumbria Tourism Awards at Cartmel Racecourse last week.

In the Tempest fleet, there were eight competing boats and the overall winner after five close races was John Robinson crewed by Lindsay Whitehead. Second, just one point behind was Ian Modral crewed by Chris Brooks and Jon Modral Gibbons and Colin Meadows were third.

The VX Ones sailed on a separate windward leeward course and took part in a total of nine races over the weekend. Competition was also close in this fleet with the winner decided at the end of the final race and just one point separating first and second boats which both had four firsts. The winners were David and Edmund Clarke, with Anne Noble and Tom Giles close behind in second. Third place went to David Chandler and David Thomson.

The 29ers had a great turn-out of 17 boats with competitors coming from all over the country as well as one team from Ireland, to take part in the prestigious Harken Grand Prix Series. They also sailed nine tight races and the winners with four firsts and results never out of the top five were Dan and Fin Armstrong of Royal Torbay Yacht Club. In second place were Harry Durcan and Harry Whitaker of Royal Cork YC and Huw Edwards and Josh Dawson of Pwllheli SC were third.
