RS200 Northern Tour/ Tempest Northerns Sept 11, 2016

RS200 Northern Tour/ Tempest Northerns Sept 11, 2016

There was a great turnout of 16 entries, including excellent support from Beaver SC with six boats, and five races were planned for the two-day event. The welcome was warm but unfortunately the wind was not co-operating and no racing was held on Saturday. But it was more than made up for the conditions on Sunday, bright sunshine and good winds. With an early start, race officer Jon Abbatt and his team ran four races in the increasingly windy and gusty South-westerly winds.

The wind developed throughout the day, but despite the strong unexpected gusts, Oliver Groves and Esther Parkhurst of Beaver SC, mastered the conditions, taking the event with three firsts – discarding a second. They won race one, three and four with fellow Beaver members James Penty and Reg Grayson winning race two. Penty/Grayson took second place overall, with no result out of the top three, and Martin and Sian Joesbury from Budworth SC were third.

A special award for dedication was given at the prizegiving to Andrew Butterworth and Jane Hivey from Delph SC who arrived on Saturday to find they had left their rudder at home. So they drove back home to get it and took part in all four races on Sunday. The Northern Tour would like to thank RS Sailing for their series support and Rope4Boats for raffle prizes.

The Tempest class also held its own open event over the same weekend with a total of eight boats entering for the Northern Championships. The Tempests also took part in four races on the Sunday and the UYC team of Jonathan Modral-Gibbons and Colin Meadows won the first three to win the event and take the Northerns title. Ian Modral and Robin Higgens of UYC were second and James and Nick Stewardson of UYC were third.
