Bart's Bash, Sept 18, 2016

Bart's Bash, Sept 18, 2016

They joined more than 7,000 sailors from 58 countries all over the world to race in Bart’s Bash, an annual event held in memory of British sailor Andrew ‘Bart’ Simpson, a double Olympic medallist who tragically lost his life whilst training for the America’s Cup in 2013.

The mammoth fundraising event is held to raise funds for the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation with sailing clubs all over the world holding a special race on the same weekend in September. A total of 42 boats of all types got together to take part in the Bart’s Bash race on Ullswater. They all raced on a simple upwind, downwind course in light winds and bright sunshine. The winners on handicap after two laps were Matty and James Lyons in a 49er with Dave and Sue Giles second in a Flying Fifteen and Jon Abbatt in a Laser, third. All the timings have been send to the Bart’s Bash organisers and everyone racing will eventually be given an overall world-wide placing.

But it was not just about the racing, club members use Bart’s Bash as an opportunity to all sail together and have a fun fundraising weekend. A Bart’s Bash evening meal with entertainment was held on Saturday - thanks to Team Lyons for a great night - and a home made cake stall Sunday - thanks to Lilian and her team - added to the funds raised which came to a total of more than £550.

Andrew Bailey, who lives near Carlisle and joined the club with his family to learn to sail only two years ago, was especially pleased to take part. He said: “Bart’s Bash was the first race I ever did two years ago. My confidence on the water has improved every year thanks to everyone at UYC. It's been the best season I have had since joining and I hope there are many, many more to come. Thank you everybody.” Also taking part in Bart’s Bash race was Andrew’s ten-year-old daughter Honore who is just as enthusiastic about sailing as her dad. Honore was crewing in a Laser 2000 and was the youngest UYC competitor on Sunday. Below, Andrew and Honore Bailey
