RYA Lifetime Commitment Award for Rob Watson

RYA Lifetime Commitment Award for Rob Watson

Recipients of the 2016 RYA Volunteer Awards and their guests were invited to a special presentation ceremony and luncheon in London on 18th November. Over 40 volunteers from across the country were recognised for their exceptional dedication and achievements in boating when they received an RYA Volunteer Award. The awards were presented by HRH The Princess Royal to volunteers across the UK in a prestigious awards ceremony held at One Great George Street, London.

Rob said: "I was most surprised to be singled out and very honoured to receive the above at the RYA AGM in London on 18th November. This only happened because of the support I have received over the past forty years from Judith and the commitment and enthusiasm of so many members who have helped us and worked with me in various roles at UYC. I offer my sincere thanks to you all and to those who nominated me for the award.

"It was a privilege to meet HRH The Princess Royal and to hear of her interest in sailing and detailed knowledge of its affiliated Clubs large and small, far and wide across the UK. In her opening remarks she mentioned the great achievement of UYC volunteers in recovering from the flood and specifically noted the great success of the Club’s ‘I Am Team GB’ day in providing a record number of sailing taster sessions in one day.

It was interesting to discuss with those from other Clubs the various opportunities and challenges we face and the importance of valuing and maximising volunteer input from all our members whatever their interest in sailing. Clubs are fortunate in having active support and professional guidance from the RYA."
