BYS North Region Junior Championships, report

BYS North Region Junior Championships, report

The Northern racers were among the thousands of youngsters who took part over weekend in a countrywide celebration of sailing at BYS’s eight Regional Junior Championships. Children aged between six and 16 descended on eight venues across the UK for two days of fun afloat. Among those taking part were some of the nation’s most promising young racers, as well as a host of kids getting their first taste of sailing.
Competitors were split into three fleets – a new fun OnBoard fleet for newcomers, a coached Regatta fleet for those developing their racing skills and a Championship fleet for experienced racers. At Ullswater, the Championship fleet sailed seven races over the two days and the Regatta fleet six races in demanding windy conditions which tested their skills. The OnBoard sailors spent the weekend having a good time together taking part in group ‘games with aims’ on the water.
For UYC was a very busy weekend on and off the water with the competitors accompanied by their families and friends on the site.
“It was a huge undertaking for the club and we will relied heavily on all our volunteers to make it work. We are very grateful to these club members who gave up their own time to enable us to host this prestigious event,” said event organiser David Clarke.
The club has a thriving youth and junior sailing programme and there was lots of enthusiasm for the event from local youngsters. A total of 29 UYC sailors took part, the most entries from one club, winning them the Junior Championship Development Trophy for UYC’s successful initiatives to encourage youngsters to take up sailing.
Fleet winners were:
Championship. Topper, Leah Fidling, Chester SC. Optimist, George Creasy, West Kirby SC. RS Tera, Teddy Dunn, Isle of Man SC. RS Feva, Felix and Theo Stewart, Windermere School.
Regatta. Topper, Rhys Fidling, Chester SC. Optimist, Elizabeth Shilling, Derwent Reservoir SC. RS Tera, Thomas Whitehead, Filey SC.
