FOURTEEN Laser sailors from Ullswater Yacht Club spent an intensive weekend  perfecting their racing skills on September 4 and 5.

The coaching weekend was organised by the Ullswater Race Development Programme which aims to help all club members get the best out of their sailing.

The weekend’s training was run by two long-standing club members who both learned to sail in Toppers at UYC when they were boys and moved on to race on the Laser circuit.

Coaches for the weekend were former national youth Laser coach Tim Hulse, son of UYC commodore Roy Hulse, and Anthony Dawson.

“We are delighted to be able to help the Laser sailors at Ullswater,” said Tim.

“We both love the club and are pleased to be working with the current Laser sailors to improve their skills.”

The 14 racers, young and old, newcomers and the more experienced spent two full days on the water taking part in a series of demanding exercises. The unusual easterly wind, which was particularly vicious on Sunday, made for challenging conditions.

“They all did very well,” said Tim. “At times the conditions were very difficult.”

The free training was funded by the two sponsors of URDP, Link Oil & Gas and Orange Mountain Bikes. Link Oil & Gas also donated copies of the RYA Laser Handbook by Paul Goodison which were handed out to those taking part.

Top 49er helm and world-class coach Paul Brotherton is also a supporter of URDP, which he helped to launch at the club in 2009. He visited the club earlier this year to give a talk and is planning to continue his input next year.

This year’s URDP programme included a ‘buddy coaching’ scheme in which experienced club sailors have been teamed up with those keen to improve.

And the limited edition 2010 URDP T-shirts have proved to be a must-have fashion item at the club!
