 Training in the sun
Training in the sun

Ullswater Yacht Club held yet another successful training day on Saturday, September 20 with youngsters and adults all put through their paces.

There were those just learning to sail and for them the light winds and welcome sunshine provided ideal conditions.

The whole event, for newcomers and those wanting to improve their technique went very well, building on everything the trainees had learned from sessions earlier in the season.

While the club site was buzzing with enthusiastic young sailors, other club members prepared to sail down the lake and back in the last Island Race of the 2008 series.

A total of eight dinghies and seven cruisers joined in the racing in winds that threatened to  become very light. But the journey to Glenridding and back was not too frustrating and everyone made it back in good time.

Dinghy winners on handicap were the usual suspects Lester and Lee Noble in a 49er with Matty and James Lyons also in a 49er second. In the cruisers, Robin Barratt with Robin Stanley and Nigel Hampson were first in an Etap and Ray Harle and Barry Edwards in a Hunter Europa were second. It was great to see veteran Hunter sailors Arthur and Muriel Waites taking part, their big smiles as they came ashore showing they had really enjoyed the sail.

The wind was even lighter on Sunday and most classes managed to complete just two races in drifting conditions. Winners were: Tempests, John Robinson/ Martin Sykes and John Robson/David Lyons; Assymetrics,David and Catherine Nicklin in an RS400 and Lester and Lee Noble in a 49er; Conventional, Josh Moran in a Laser; Cruisers Robin Barratt, Robin Stanley and Nigel Hampson in an Etap.
