Perfect conditions at last The young Topper sailors were out in force at Ullswater Yacht Club on Saturday, September 27, for their last two series races of the season. A total of19 boats took part in the cadet races which were deciders for the titles of overall winners. The ten race day series has been hotly contested all season and the turnout has been excellent. The youngsters, all aged under 15, had perfect sailing conditions, sunshine and good winds, and the places were closely fought throughout. In race one the winner was rising star Christopher Brooks who sails in the under 12 category. Second was Jamie Neilson and Tom Neilson was third. In race two the winner was Jenny Tynan with Matthew Johnston in second place and Christopher Brooks third. The cadets have had a great racing season and all the Topper sailors who have taken part, not just the winners, deserve congratulations. The adult club racers also enjoyed the good winds for the day’s two handicap races. Out of a fleet of nine boats, the winners on corrected time in both races were Lester and Lee Noble in a 49er. Julie Noble and James Lyons in a 29er were second in both. Five cruisers took part in the Denis Vernon series race which was won on handicap by Liz Amos and Harry Patrick in an Etap. The bright weather continued on Sunday, but the wind had dropped leading to a postponement to the start of the racing. It took the wind most of the day to settle down and the dinghy fleet decided to wait until the afternoon before they started racing. Only the Tempests sailed all three Sunday races and competition was close with three different winners – Ian Modral and Robin Higgens; Nick Stewardson and Ray Stiles; John Robinson and Lindsey Whitehead. David Parkinson in a single-handed Streaker won both the conventional dinghy races on handicap. In the asymmetrics, Lester and Lee Noble in a 49er won race one on handicap while Anne Noble and Hayley Moran in a 29er took race two. Cruiser race winners were Dave and Sue Giles in a Hunter. | Posted on Tuesday, September 30, 2008 (Archive on Tuesday, October 07, 2008) Posted by sue giles Contributed by sue giles
