FLOOD DAMAGE UPDATE: 19th Feb

We had a very constructive meeting yesterday with the claim manager and the professionals who are helping us with the repair of the clubhouse. The scope of the repairs has been agreed and we can now proceed to a more detailed specification and costing. We are also closer to placing an order for the temporary buildings that we shall require through this year’s sailing season. At its meeting on 27 February, the Management Committee will focus on the plans for the season: there is a lot to do before sailing begins in just over five weeks’ time.

 The 49er Fleet Minimize

Welcome to

Ullswaters 49er Fleet

The Boat....

The 49er is the two person one-design skiff which has transformed competitive dinghy sailing offering performance, excitement and spectacle, previously only found in 18 footers, together with the unmatched ferocity of competition only generated in Olympic fleets.

Designed by skiff supremo Julian Bethwaite, the ultra light, slender hull offers minimal resistance with no noticeable speed hump. This means the 49er smoothly accelerates onto the plane and the speed just goes on rising.
The most remarkable feature of the 49er at first sight is its solid wings which make the boat safe and a joy to sail. Trapezing from these wide wings, the crew members generate a massive righting moment to control the power from the huge sail area, and continue accelerating the boat.

At Ullswater....

Ullswater plays home to 5 49ers. The long 7 mile stretch of water provides perfect racing and training conditions for the 49er, which revels in long windward, leeward courses with plenty of space to manouever the fast boats. The surge of 49ers at Ullswater has been led by ex International Canoe supremo's Lester and Lee Noble, who continue to dominate all things skiff on and off the water at Ullswater. The chase was originally led by the simpson brothers and then later by Matty and James Lyons and most recentley Julz Noble and Neil Robinson.

2008 Season ...

The start of the 2008 season has been a slow one for Ullswater 49er fleet with only the keanest venturing out in snow, sleet, hail and massive winds. The early battles have been between the Noble brothers (Orange Mountain Bikes) and the Lyons Brothers (Orange Mountain Bikes 2) where the racing has been fierce and intense often to the point of almost match racing, but always with the number 1 boat ahead.

Most recentley Ullswater played host to the first of three Nation wide Class training events. Coached by Ian Martin who has been at the front end of the internation fleet for some time, 8 boats form both home and away enjoy 2 days of intense training.

Breaking News ....

  • Ullswater plays host to very sucessful training weekend. 8 boats from home and away enjoyed the expertese of Ian Martin for 2 days. Everyone benifited from it and improved. Thanks to Ullswater YC, Ian Martin and Lester for organising and running the event. Great work!!
